Chapter 7

Hunter hurried back to the village, concern over some strange and ominous noises he’d heard as he walked past the dark woods. Although the sun was just beginning to peek over the horizon, it wouldn’t penetrate the black woods’ recesses for another hour or so.

He shook his head at himself and chuckled; he’d only just left and he couldn’t wait to see Tisha tonight. She’d spun some kind of magic around his mind and heart, and he was completely enchanted by her. And I’m not that scared of it, he mused with a grin.

Hunter mentally shook himself. Distracted, walking this close to the woods was not a good idea, so he focused on his surroundings. And when he did, he heard the footsteps closing in behind him. The footsteps were stealthy, almost silent, but Hunter had trained his ears for just that type of walking. He continued on the path he was following, not changing his pace or his steps. He began whistling nonchalantly, loudly, but he took his hands out of his pockets so that he was ready for anything. He had no weapon with him; he’d stopped carrying a weapon on a daily basis a few years ago. A builder didn’t have many enemies, after all.

Ahead, he saw a tree that blocked half the path. He ducked quickly behind it when he reached it and waited silently for his follower to approach. After thirty seconds, he realized the steps had also fallen silent. But he knew the man, were, whatever, was still nearby. He patiently waited for that person to reveal himself. As he watched the path, he saw the shadow of his pursuer. When the shadow became a solid person, he leapt out, grabbed the man’s arm, and twisted it up behind his back. He slammed him into the tree and put his elbow against the back of the man’s neck.

The man was at least three inches shorter than Hunter and probably weighed fifty pounds less. Hunter held him against the tree easily, smelling his scent as he did so. Werebear, Hunter realized. The man grunted out a laugh.

“Haven’t lost your moves, even after all these years, huh, Hunter?”

Hunter’s brow furrowed at the familiar voice. He released the man and stepped back, although he didn’t let his guard down. “Wade?”

The smaller man straightened away from tree and brushed himself off. He looked at Hunter and grinned. “Nice to see you, too.”

“Sorry about that, Wade. You know better than to follow someone so close,” Hunter told him, returning the grin.

“Well, follow someone with our training, anyway,” Wade laughed. He rolled his shoulders and rubbed his jaw, which had hit the tree pretty hard when Hunter had shoved him into it. “I wasn’t sure it was you, although I’d heard you were in this area.”

“Heard I was here? Have you been looking for me?” Hunter asked, suspicious of his old friend’s intentions.

Wade nodded. “Yeah. I’ve got some news for you from your old life.”

“My old life is over, man.
